With Thanksgiving around the corner, we turned to Fine Dining’s Wine and Beverage Director, Neil Loomis, to find out what he thinks pairs best with the meal. He pulled a list together that offers something to fit every taste, and here is what he has to say about his picks.
2015 Loimer Gruner Veltliner, Kamptal: aromatic and lively, with apple and citrus components, refreshes the palate with every taste. $20
2015 Chavy Chouet Bourgogne Blanc: chardonnay from the mother land, its rich and focused with lemon, apple and pear. The single best white wine pairing for all Thanksgiving fare. $25
2015 Le Cengle Rose, Cotes de Provence: passion fruit and currant aromas with a fresh strawberry palate, tasty with root vegetables. $16
2015 Malivoire Rose, Beamsville Bench, Canada: elegant with lasting cherry finish. Sweet potato casserole anyone? $31
2015 Sarocco Moscato d’ Asti: light, with a slight frizzante. A touch of sweetness makes this a fun aperitif or easy dessert wine after a feast culminating with a selection of pies. $20
And for the reds:
2013 Domaine de la Chapelle des Bois, Fleurie: Thanksgiving tradition of delicious Gamay from a unique Cru is always a winner. $26
2011 Fouassier Sancerre Rouge: great alternative to a red Burgundy. Subtle fruit with leather and earthiness. Brussel sprouts with pancetta are a fun match. $32
2014 Moniker Pinot Noir, Mendocino: intense berry, rhubarb and potpourri. Its juiciness pairs with any sauces prepared for the feast. $25
2014 Don Cosimo Nero d’ Avola, Sicily: jammy raspberry with dry graphite finish is great with the cranberry sauce. $18
2013 Clos du Caillou, Chateauneuf du Pape: elegant and balanced wine that pairs with the whole meal start to finish. $60
2013 Davis Family Zinfandel, Russian River Valley: big, bright, ripe fruit. American classic varietal for a classic American holiday. $39
2014 Cesari Valpolicella Ripasso: full bodied baby Amarone with ripe cherries and a smooth persistent finish. Crispy skinned turkey leg with Ripasso. Yum. $25
