Off the Hook and Straight to Jackson

This summer, King Sushi takes fresh to the next level.

Since the start of the pandemic, the restaurant has shifted its role and mission in Jackson. Instead of exclusively selling sushi and seafood dishes off their restaurant menu, they have now opened their doors to customers as a fresh, sustainable fish market.

According to chef and fish market manager George Vandercook, their seafood goes straight from the dock to their door. He pointed to a beautiful piece of sashimi sitting in the sushi bar widow and said, “this piece was caught yesterday, and arrived this morning.” This not only gives customers the freshest seafood a landlocked state can find, but it also eliminates the supply chain middleman.

King Sushi purchases their fish mostly from the East Coast, but also supports fisheries nationwide. Last Thursday, the King Sushi fish market offered fresh bluefin tuna belly (chutoro) from Massachusetts, yellowtail tuna (hamachi) from Hawaii, striped bass and fluke from Rhode Island, Bangs Island mussels and lobster from Maine and Kusshi oysters from Washington.

“Fresh fish is super healthy and it’s one of the last vestiges of wild food.”

George Vandercook, chef and fish market manager

The best thing about the King Sushi Fish Market is that you know exactly where your food is from and there’s always an expert there to walk you through the best way to prepare and serve your food.

So, if you’re ready to ditch freezer fish, here’s how you get the freshest seafood in Jackson.

  1. Follow @kingsushijh on Instagram: Every day, King Sushi has a new fish market and restaurant menu that they post on their social media account.
  2. Call in your order: While you can walk-in and order – due to limited outdoor seating – King Sushi highly encourages calling in orders before arrival. This summer, there are no reservations. They are open Tuesday to Friday for lunch on the deck from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Tuesday to Saturday for dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. King Sushi begins taking dinner orders at 3 p.m. and you can choose a pick-up time and take it home or sit on the deck and enjoy their seasonal cocktails and drinks.
  3. Throw a party: King Sushi caters! You can order fresh sushi and seafood straight to your home to elevate your dinner parties and celebrate any occasion.

As a big part of a small local business, Vandercook hopes the Jackson community will come out and support King Sushi’s efforts to bring fresh seafood to Jackson and keep a local favorite alive.
