Local Treats at MADE

You may already know and love MADE, the charming repurposed goods store in downtown Jackson’s Gaslight Alley. What you probably don’t know: It’s also a hub for incredible foodie finds, including snacks, sweets and accessories.

No trip to MADE would be complete without the show-stopping bestseller: Pig Candy. Created and bagged at Jackson’s Café Genevieve, Pig Candy is a tantalizing, bacony meld of the sweet and savory. These heavily seasoned strips of bacon have been popular at Café Genevieve for several years, but only came to MADE within the last year or so. Nevertheless, they’ve taken off. Locals and tourists alike are snapping up the $14 bags. One visitor recently purchased nine at once –– not a bad idea, at the rate they’re going.

For your summer barbecues, now you can buy hot sauce from Q Roadhouse at MADE, too. The 4 ounce ottles of hot sauce are $8 each and come in two varieties, green chili and habanero.

“We love to support local artists and businesses,” said owner John Frechette. “Folks have been really drawn to our food items and it is great get a true Flavor of Jackson in the shop.  Plus they are just fun for folks to take home.”

For those with a sweet tooth, Bee’s Brothers Salted Caramels provide an exciting twist on an old favorite. The brothers, based in Utah’s Cache Valley, raise bees together and use honey — not sugar — to make these caramels. Ten dollars can buy a whole bag of these quirky melt-in-your-mouth treats.

More savory gourmands can check out their Blaak Onion Jam, a savory jelly made by the famous  Beekman Boys from upstate New York, of the Cooking Channel’s The Fabulous Beekman Boys fame.  At only $10 per jar, it’s a steal. The rich onion taste works just as well on meats and cheeses as it does on breads. Don’t forget to come back when the boys’ Blaak Drizzle, a delicious $15 basalmic reductive, is in stock.

If you’re looking for a hostess gifts, Shuglove Candy jars are a recent MADE addition that are almost too pretty to eat. Almost. Each jar is beautifully wrapped and makes a sweet present at only $18. Shuglove offers jars of fruit sticks, lemon drops and cherry drops, and all three are exquisitely pretty.

There’s no shortage of prettiness in the store’s kitchen accessories either. MADE offers not only artisan cutting boards and rolling pins, but gives you the option to customize them with a family or company name. One inventive cheeseboard is made from chalk-friendly slate, encouraging you to introduce cheeses to your guests by chalking in their names.

Come hungry the next time you’re in Gaslight Alley. The cure for your munchies may be hiding next to MADE’s leatherbound journals.
