Embracing Your Lunch Break: Part 1

For many of us, we have the best intentions in the morning of getting up before work and getting a long list of tasks done before leisurely walking out the door. That happens about 5 percent of the mornings I have somewhere to be before 10 a.m. It is usually a whirlwind of getting dressed and eating breakfast while simultaneously drinking coffee and running out the door (add five minutes in the winter for scraping off the windshield). One of the daily items that suffers from this is getting a chance to pack your lunch at home. For most people their lunch breaks are a coveted respite in the middle of a busy day to sit down, eat, and hopefully not think about anything more than the newspaper sitting in front of you.

I used to find myself gravitating to the same places on those days when I am looking for a middle of the day bite, whether that be because of proximity or time constrictions. There are so many great places in town that I thought it would be helpful to lay out the options for lunch. On those days where you can venture away from the office for something a little more satisfying than the sandwich you packed, count on Dishing to help steer you in the right direction.

We have broken it up into two parts: The 30 Minute Break and the Sit Down Lunch.

The 30 Minute Break: For those days when you need something satisfying and still have time to sit down and eat it before getting back to the grind.

Cuttys- Cutty’s is known for two things, pizza and cheesesteaks, both of which they do an absolute fantastic job at. Don’t forget they also have salads, a perfect accompaniment to that slice of pizza on the go.

Backcountry Deli- Looking for a good sandwich close to downtown? Backcountry Deli has a wide variety of premium meats and cheeses for your sandwich pleasure. I’m a big fan of the Pilgrim, it’s like Thanksgiving in a sandwich.

Betty Rock- A Jackson Hole lunchtime institution in the eyes of many, Betty Rock is a great place to grab a bite. Always quick and always tasty, Betty Rock will suit any taste.

Pinky G’s- With their $5 and $7 lunch specials it is hard to beat if your around the square. Cozy up for a slice of the day and Tall Boy before heading back to the office.

Creekside- When I first discovered how amazing their sandwiches were, I almost wanted to keep it a secret. Totally customizable and packed with ingredients, you get amazing bang for your buck.

DOG- Mmmmm…. Burritos. D.O.G. is still a little bit of a secret. Walking up to your window and ordering a spicy burrito makes anyone who is in the know feel slightly like more of a Jackson local than before. For me, their breakfast burritos are a great lunchtime meal.

E.leaven- I don’t think I have had anything here I didn’t like. The only problem is the pastries are so good they are usually gone by lunchtime so come early. The sandwiches will always fill you up, and the north windowed side room great place to sit down and enjoy.

Pearl Street Bagels- Not only do these ladies make some of the best coffee in town, I would consider them sandwich-making professionals. I haven’t done any official timing, but I’m guessing if you know what you want you can have an amazing bagel sandwich in about a minute. Just don’t ask them to toast it…

Full Steam Subs- Hot Dogs, gyros, subs, salads, this “Deli That Will Rock Your Belly” offers a great value and awesome food on the go or to enjoy there. Check out their authentic Chicago dog or Rueben Dog next time you are in.

Healthy Being- Craving something fresh, healthy and really good for you? Healthy being is your stop for fresh cold pressed juice and great food too! They have lots of grab and go options for eating well on the run.

Cafe Boheme- This busy west Jackson coffee spot offers much more than just warm beverages before heading up to ski. With a wide selection of sandwiches, paninis, salads and soups, the cozy interior will make you want to go back to work a few minutes late.

Cowboy Coffee- Located on Broadway accross the street from the Town Square, Cowboy Coffee has some great snacks to fill you up. Still craving breakfast for lunch? Check out their Cowboy Croissant.

Liberty Burger- Burgers served how you like it. With everything ranging from gourmet to tried and true classics, Liberty Burger has something to suit all tastes. If you don’t feel like red meat they have great turkey and veggie burgers as well.

Chris Hogberg

Food and cooking has been a great travel buddy for Chris, finally taking root in Jackson. Originally from Seattle, Chris enjoys rainy walks to get coffee, cold dark beers, and cozying up in a warm restaurant kitchen. He has a background in marketing but has spent most of his days working in fine dining behind the line. Now you can find him selling hummus, perusing the farmers markets, or mountain biking behind his Aussie Shephard, Zephyr.
