The Sunshine Station’s Start

Co-founders of The Sunshine Station, Karey Furan and Alexa MacDonald, realized as they were planning their own kids’ parties that Jackson was… well… a bit of a party resource desert. “At that time, we didn’t even have Target yet, and Kmart was gone, so there was really nothing unless you drove to Idaho Falls,” Furan said. “There was a real gap in materials to host kids’ parties.”

The two partnered up and created a one-stop-shop for parents looking to ensure that their kids’ special day was truly unforgettable. “We don’t have amusement parks here or many places for kids to go, so seeing the magic at these parties is just so much fun for them.”

Themes, Style and Options

While the team is delighted to decorate for kids of any gender, they find themselves most often contributing to parties for girls. Popular themes lately have tended to include Taylor Swift, American Girl Dolls, or simply pink and sparkly vibes.

In addition to eye-catching balloon garlands and decor, The Sunshine Station also offers fun party rental items like the Bubble House — a translucent dome that they fill with balloons for little kids to play — and a set of short boho-style tables with pillows and blankets. “Those are another really cute theme for kids,” Furan said.

The Sunshine Station also offers a photo booth with a background that’s tailored to the party’s theme, making it easy for kids to capture memories of the event and treasure them for years to come.

Hosting Tips

When it comes to planning for a party, The Sunshine Station makes it easy to hand off the work for decorating, which means parents can focus on other parts of party prep. Furan’s biggest piece of advice? Plan ahead.

“Ideally, we need at least two weeks to prepare,” she said, recommending parents drop them an email (book@the-sunshine-station.com) as soon as they’ve got the party date nailed down. The same advice stands for anything else you’ll need for the party, especially during the busy summer months. Food, equipment rentals and venue reservations are always important to have arranged with plenty of time to spare.

But all the work? Absolutely worth it, Furan said.

“What we’ve learned through this experience is how much joy these parties bring to little kids. A lot of times parents do it for themselves and their friends, but the joy that these kids actually experience, the memories they create — we feel so much joy watching them see it for the first time.”

Melissa Thomasma

In full rebellion against the unpredictable climate of the Rocky Mountains, you can find Melissa on her Teton Valley deck grilling any month of the year. Typically in flip flops. Snow, rain, wind… no weather is too fierce. She’s a lover of peaches in any form, has a borderline addiction to arugula, and (strangely) has been known to drizzle soy sauce on pizza. But even more than she loves her stand mixer and cast iron collection, she adores cooking for her husband and two kids. When this Jackson Hole native isn’t scurrying around her messy kitchen, she’s probably outside floating the river, hiking, camping, fishing, or, well… grilling.
