The Tastiest Rack of the Winter

The holidays are a sacred time in the food world. Between Thanksgiving, Christmas, and all the get togethers in between, this time of year is steeped in food tradition. Whether it is a roasted turkey or honey-glazed ham, we all have our comfort fare that evokes a sense of the season.

While lamb might be in a few people’s holiday wheelhouse, it is surely underappreciated in comparison to the other main course staples of the season. When done right, a nice rack or juicy roast is an amazingly flavorful addition to anyone’s cold weather repertoire. If your not inclined to going about it on your own, don’t fret, there are plenty of places in Jackson that have you covered.

When you think of going out for rack of lamb, the Blue Lion should definitely come to mind. For well over three decades, they have been roasting their signature dish to perfection, and they have a group of devout followers to show for it. Cooked with Dijon mustard, breadcrumbs and served with a peppercorn rosemary cream sauce, this entree is not to be missed.

The Snake River Grill is featuring a roasted rack of lamb on their winter menu as well. Za’atar smashed potatoes and a spinach saag paneer transform this dish into a delicious middle eastern entree.

Skiing in the village and craving some juicy lamb goodness? The Westbank Grill features a rack of lamb seared on their 1,800 F infrared grill. The garlic and rosemary marinated meat is sourced from Prairie Harvest and is surely to satisfy.

Looking for something hearty? Check out the roasted lamb shank at Trio. Served with blue corn grits, swiss chard and gremolatta, this locally sourced lamb (from Lava Lake, Idaho) will fill your belly and keep you warm on even the coldest of winter nights.

Bin 22 also features a wonderful shank to keep you toasty during the colder months. Their shared plate comes with polenta and a San Marzano tomato and olive jus.

The Kitchen is offering braised lamb cheeks on their winter menu. Often overlooked, the cheek is an extremely flavorful, lean and tender cut. The Kitchen’s version is served with saffron cous cous, pistachios, raisins, carrots, fennel and preserved lemon.

Thinking of cooking your own? Stop by the Whole Grocer for a great selection of fresh and frozen options. Stocking multiple brands, you can be sure to find a selection of racks and t-bones in the cooler. If you are looking for more of the slow cooking fare like roasts or cheeks, be sure to talk to anyone behind the meat counter to point you in the right direction. Already thinking of roasting lamb burgers and racks on the grill? Larks Meadow is a great source for absolutely delicious local lamb which can be found in the summer time at the Peoples Market and the Farmers Market on Town Square.
