For some people, Saturday morning marks the end of a long week and a much-awaited morning to sleep in, leisurely drink a cup of coffee and map out the garage sales that you are going to check out during the day. For others, Saturday brings a very early alarm, loading up your car and bringing your bounty downtown. The Farmers Market on Town Square starts this Saturday and provides a chance for both of those aforementioned groups of people to come together to buy and sell delicious local produce.
I fall in to the wake up early and pack up your car category, which will prove to be exceptionally hard as the first market is the morning after July 4th. As much as I love to celebrate, barbecue and watch fireworks, I will be equally as excited to wake up way too early and get ready for another great year of Saturday markets. Going in to its 14th year, the market has continued to grow and is a staple of many local’s, and visitor’s, Saturday morning routines.
The Saturday Market also plays a huge part in giving back to the community. Picking one nonprofit a week that is featured, they have raised more than $200,000 for charity. You will also find a chef of the week from a local restaurant featured at the market, set up to showcase their food offerings.
What makes the Saturday market great is getting to connect with so many people, whether that be vendors, customers, or even people visiting who are amazed at the local food options. Although I’m sure it won’t be easy getting out of bed and heading downtown early to get the best looking berries or biggest carton of eggs on the 5th of July, it will be worth it.
