Fruit Stand Fills Needs For Fresh Produce

fruit stand, produce jackson, dishing jackson holeWhile us locals still have to wait more than a month for the Jackson Hole Farmer’s Market to open for the season, a new fruit stand south of town promises to fill our fresh produce cravings until then…and throughout the summer.

The Jackson Hole Fruit Station opened Sunday. Unlike the 18-wheeler that rolled into town a few years ago with produce from California warehouses, this stuff is actually from a family farm in the Central Valley. And the farmers are actually staffing this stand.

“My dad came out this way last year, and he saw there wasn’t a lot of diversity in the fruit,” said Lindsey Domenici, who’s running the seasonal stand. “He thought it would be a good idea to bring what we have, our quality, out this way.”

Most of the produce is grown on the Strambis Farms in Sanger, Calif. (with the exception of more exotic items such as mangoes and pineapples). The stand is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. through the end of October, and maybe into November. New shipments are expected weekly. The family already operates a few produce stands in California.

There you’ll find apples, stone fruits, citrus fruits, cherries and watermelons. Shipments of sweet corn, tomatoes and other vegetables (squash, zucchini, artichokes, okra) are expected. You’ll also find jams, nuts, dried fruit, popcorn and honey, all products created within miles of the Strambis family farm.

The stand is located on Highway 89 across from Albertson’s.

For those of you wondering, the Jackson Hole People’s Market opens June 20, and the Farmer’s Market on July 7. Some CSA’s have already started delivering their weekly shipments, and you can find local produce such as Wyomatoes (and Wyomatoes basil) and fresh greens at Jackson Whole Grocer.

And stay tuned to our website; we’ll launch the first in a new weekly series next week called “What’s Fresh,” highlighting what produce is coming in from area farms. Our new issue will be here in a few weeks, and in there you’ll also find a comprehensive look at our area markets.

Can you tell we are excited for summer?
