A Local’s Taste: Terra Owner Dana Sanders Souther

No visit to Jackson Hole is complete without popping into Terra for a little retail therapy. No matter what day you stroll through, you’ll likely end up getting to chat with owner Dana Sanders Souther herself, who’s in the shop almost every day and has been since she opened the business in 2003.

Dana’s life in Jackson began at the Triangle X Ranch, as both a guest and employee, before she launched Terra 18 years ago. The boutique in downtown Jackson is a favorite for visitors and locals alike, with a blend of classic and trendy collections that include well-known brands and unique pieces that are hard to come by in a remote spot like Jackson.

For me, living in Jackson Hole has always felt like early retirement in a way. There is rarely a day that passes where I don’t stop and take the outdoors in. My job infrequently feels like work, I spend my day being a part of other women’s “happy moments! It’s called retail therapy for a reason!

As well as a love for all things fashion, Dana enjoys the incredible food the valley has to offer. Here are a few of Dana’s favorites for dining out in Jackson Hole.

What is your favorite restaurant to dine out in Jackson? Any favorite dishes?

Truly, a night out at Snake River Grill always feels like an occasion – even if it’s just a Tuesday! Their menu changes quite a bit, which I love, but it’s their desserts that have me for life. Seasonal fruit pies and homemade ice creams, doughnuts, butterscotch pudding – must I choose just one?

Any go-to take-out places since COVID?

SUDA has really rocked my takeout world.  Not only have they been able to preserve the quality of dining in, but even their selection of takeout containers is just beautiful. Details matter, and they always nail it.

What is your favorite specialty cocktail or beverage in town?

I’m a forever fan of SUDA’s Matsuyama – a smoky mezcal blended with matcha and a kiss of honey.

What is your favorite lunch and dinner spot? Favorite menu item?

For lunch while I’m working you’ll find me popping across the street to grab the sweet potato and olive tapenade toast from Healthy Being Juicery and then a toffee oatmeal cookie and espresso spritzer from Persephone Bakery. Gotta spread the wealth!

Dinner at Glorietta is my happy place. I grew up in South Florida with phenomenal Italian cuisine and the homemade pastas, meatballs and grown-up fried mozzarella at this fabulous trattoria satisfy my never ending cravings.

If you were to go out for a treat, what’s your go to and where?

If you’ve lost me, you’ll most likely find me at our local Haagen Dazs, where owner Kris whips up a Dulce de Leche Dazzler – their twist on a banana split.

Anything you’re looking forward to with regards to dining this fall?

Fall often signals cozier dishes and a little more space at my favorite spots. It’ll be time to grab a bowl of Trio’s signature blue cheese fries, the poblano burger at Liberty Burger, and for sure the first chocolate soufflé of the season at Snake River Grill as soon as they open this winter. Yum.
