This spring, the National Museum of Wildlife Art is inviting the community to gather for an evening that blends art, history, wildlife conservation, and yes, barbecu.

On Thursday, May 28, from 5–7 p.m., the National Museum of Wildlife Art is hosting a free community celebration for Bison-tennial: From Colonization to Rematriation, a powerful new exhibition exploring the deep and complicated relationship between bison and the North American West. The exhibition traces the story of the American bison from pre-colonial times through westward expansion and the devastating near-eradication of the great herds, ultimately arriving at today’s restoration and rematriation efforts led by Indigenous communities and conservation partners.
Guests can expect more than just gallery viewing during the opening celebration. The evening includes:
- BBQ bites from Palate for the first 300 attendees
- Complimentary beer (21+) or root beer from Grand Teton Brewing for the first 300 guests
- A museum-wide scavenger hunt
- Access to all new summer exhibitions
- A 5:30 p.m. presentation and Q&A with Jason Baldes in the Cook Auditorium
The event shines a spotlight on one of the most important conservation and cultural conversations happening in the West today, while still delivering the kind of lively, community-centered evening Jackson loves best.

While you’re there, be sure to explore the Museum’s additional summer exhibitions, including From Sea to Shining Sea: Wildlife Above & Below the Waves and Art in Motion: Kinetic Sculpture with Ivan Iler.
Opening May 23 and on view through Aug. 23, From Sea to Shining Sea: Wildlife Above & Below the Waves celebrates aquatic wildlife across North America, from freshwater rivers and wetlands to coastal shores and open seas. The exhibition features rarely displayed works from the Museum’s permanent collection, including pieces by Andy Warhol, Robert Bateman, Carl Rungius, Katherine Lane Weems and He Xi. Expect everything from dolphins and sea turtles to puffins, otters and seals in a collection designed to connect wildlife, art and the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary.

A Quick Word on Palate
If you haven’t dined at Palate lately, consider this your sign to treat yourself to one of the most memorable views (and food!) in Jackson.

Located inside the National Museum of Wildlife Art and overlooking the National Elk Refuge, Palate has quietly become one of Jackson’s standout daytime destinations. From elevated lunches and fresh baked goods to seasonal cocktails and unbeatable patio views, the restaurant brings the same thoughtful creativity to its food as the Museum does to its exhibitions. Our go-to order always includes a spicy bloody Mary with their sister restaurant Gather’s signature hot sauce and house-made chips and dip to start and a French onion grilled cheese. Reservations recommended.
