Wyoming Whiskey’s Queen of the Tetons: A Toast to Grizzly 399’s Legacy

In the wake of a significant loss to the wildlife community, Wyoming Whiskey has unveiled “Queen of the Tetons”, a limited-edition bourbon dedicated to the iconic Grizzly 399, who tragically passed away in late October. This new bourbon release pays homage to her enduring spirit and her 28 years as a beloved symbol of Wyoming’s rugged wilderness.

Grizzly 399, the legendary matriarch of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, attracted wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and tourists alike. At seven feet tall and weighing 400 pounds, she captivated onlookers near the Snake River and raised an impressive 18 cubs, making her a true icon of resilience and maternal dedication. Wyoming Whiskey’s “Queen of the Tetons” captures that untamed spirit in a bottle while supporting a worthy cause.

With fewer than 720 bottles produced, “Queen of the Tetons” is an exclusive release, and each bottle features an evocative image of Grizzly 399, captured by acclaimed nature photographer Thomas Mangelsen. Wyoming Whiskey has made this release available exclusively at its Jackson Barrel House and Kirby Whiskey Shop, along with select Wyoming retailers.

Tasting Notes

This 99-proof bourbon offers a nuanced experience:

Nose: Honey mingles with ripe field berries, dusted in cinnamon spice.

Palate: A decadent layer of white chocolate mocha is accented by red fruit and rich brown sugar.

Finish: The finish is a warm, lingering blend of candied ginger and soft vanilla.

More than just a commemorative release, Wyoming Whiskey will donate $20,000 to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation in Grizzly 399’s honor. These funds will be directed toward grizzly bear education, research, and conservation programs, underscoring Wyoming Whiskey’s commitment to preserving Wyoming’s wide-open spaces and the wildlife that calls it home.

David DeFazio, co-founder of Wyoming Whiskey, expresses the sentiment behind the release, saying, “Grizzly 399 earned her title as the Queen of the Tetons by placing her 28 years of life on display. She was shrewd, which resulted in her resilience. And her resilience captivated us all.”

For those looking to add a truly special bottle to their collection while supporting conservation, Wyoming Whiskey has plans to auction off the 399th bottle, with all proceeds benefiting the Grand Teton National Park Foundation.
