The Freezer at the Aspens & Pearl Street Markets Opens for Second Summer

If you’re in search of a sweet treat on a hot day, swing by The Freezer for some frozen custard on the west bank or downtown.

Now in its second summer, the shack is owned and operated by the Aspens Market and Pearl Street Market is located next to the entrance of the store. The Freezer is open daily from noon to 6 p.m. depending on weather and staffing. Similar to soft-serve ice cream, the frozen dessert is available in vanilla, chocolate or a swirled combination of both.

A small serving of custard in a dish or a sugar cone will run you $3, and toppings are 50 cents each. A large serving in a dish costs $4.50, making it an affordable dessert for the whole family. Toppings include traditional sprinkles, gummy bears, M&M’s and Heath Toffee.

Frozen custard is very similar to ice cream in that it contains milk, cream and sugar. But it differs because it also contains egg yolks which add to the rich creamy flavor and texture. Beware of this if you or anyone in your party has an egg allergy.

Frozen custard from The Freezer is also available at Pearl Street Market in downtown Jackson, but you will miss the nostalgia that comes from ordering your ice cream at a window and being served by school kids just making a few summer bucks.

If you’d like to take a souvenir home, hats and T-shirts are also for sale at the stand, sporting their logo of an abominable snowman holding an ice cream cone. So next time you’re craving something cold after a hike or a swim, make a pit stop at The Freezer. You can enjoy your frozen custard at the picnic tables available or go for a stroll down the bike path and soak up all the summertime goodness.
