The Après Wing Showdown

You’re hungry. You’ve been schussing down the mountain all day and it’s time to call it quits before the spring slush gets a bad hold on those tired legs of yours. Sun’s out, guns out. You grab your buddies, saddle up to a bar and order a sharable, delectable treat to quell your appetite. What to order is simple: wings. Where to go is the true question. With that question in mind, I offer the next installment of the après showdown.

The Contenders:
The Mangy Moose Saloon
Q Roadhouse and Brewing Company
The Spur Restaurant and Bar—the winner of the Nacho Showdown, ready for another battle

The Mangy Moose Wings

moosewings

  • Price: $11.95
  • No. of wings: 10
  • Flavor options: honey bbq, spicy, or nuclear
  • Sides: carrots, celery, blue cheese dressing
  • Size and quality of the wings: good size, but a bit smaller than Spur’s and the Q’s. Cooked well, the crispiest skin of the three.
  • Flavor of the wings: honey barbecue was tasty and a good option for those looking for a milder wing. Nuclear was HOT, and your standard spicy was a reliable, good wing
  • Caliber of the sides: standard, nothing special
  • Overall rating: B; good price, good quality

Q Roadhouse and Brewing Company’s Wings

qwings2

  • Price: $13
  • No. of wings: 8-10
  • Flavor options: barbecue, spicy buffalo, or Al Pastor
  • Sides: carrots, celery, blue cheese and homemade ranch dressing
  • Size and quality of the wings: good sized wings, perfectly cooked and flavorful meat
  • Flavor of the wings: both the barbecue and al pastor wings were smoked. The al pastor was a standout as it was incredibly tasty and unique. The standard buffalo flavor was a bit thin on the glaze and nothing special, but certainly reliable
  • Caliber of the sides: outstanding dipping sauces stole the show
  • Overall rating: A-; higher price, but more unique, wider variety, best sides and best flavor of the three

Spur Restaurant and Bar’s Wings

spurwings

  • Flavor options: buffalo style
  • Sides: celery and blue cheese dressing
  • Size and quality of wings: good sized, perfectly cooked, flavorful meat, spicy and delicious buffalo glaze
  • Flavor of the wings: great for your classic wing
  • Caliber of the sides: standard, but lonely without carrots
  • Overall rating: B+; good price, great quality

Molly Perlman

Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Molly learned two things about life: that she didn’t want to spend the rest of it in a city, and that she couldn’t live without diverse, vibrant and delicious food within an arms reach. So, she started cooking. A lot. Then she moved to the mountains. A Jackson resident for 5 years now, Molly is continuing to learn to balance a life of playing in the outdoors, owning multiple pets, growing her own food, working the 8-5 office job and cooking up a storm. She loves toast, campfires, being underwater, fresh tomatoes, Patsy Cline, playing in her garden and capturing every last bit of each seasons.
