Local Restaurants Serving up Nachos With a Twist

By definition, nachos are a Mexican dish that consists of heated tortilla chips covered with melted cheese, that are often served as a snack or appetizer. However, Jackson Hole restaurants are creating much more elaborate versions of nachos that include many other ingredients, and are substantial enough to serve as a main dish!

Check out the loaded al pastor fries that have been on the menu at Streetfood since last winter. The idea came to fruition after the owners went to Vegas, and found an authentic taco restaurant serving traditional lengua fries with cheese, soft and tender lengua, sour cream and cilantro.

On one of our trips we decided that we could make a spin, and it would be an awesome addition to our menu, with our hand cut fries and delicious taco meats, we knew we could do it right.

Made with local Idaho potatoes, the crew at Streetfood spends a lot of time and energy cutting their own fries, which is no easy process, and this summer they went through fifteen, five gallon buckets a day! The fries are piled high with al pastor, cheese sauce, pickled onions, and a homemade avocado cream.

It is all about flavor! We cut and marinate our own pork, make our cheese dip from scratch and pickle our own onions. Combining all of these delicious ingredients with the fries to soak them up just makes sense. It is kind of a play on poutine, but with a Mexican twist.

For the nacho fans with dietary restrictions Hayden’s Post at Snow King Resort offers a vegetarian and gluten free option with their gringo nachos, made with fresh tortilla chips, cheese sauce, shredded cheese, pickled jalapeños, black beans, pico de gallo and sour cream. And if your friends like something a little more hearty, they can go ahead and add steak or chicken to their order.

Next, lets talk about the Totchos from Eleanor’s. Sure, you have the option to order regular ol’ nachos too, but why not step outside the box and order them tater tot style? The deep fried taters are piled high with cheddar and jack cheese, beer cheese sauce, black beans, red bell peppers, jalapeños, onions, salsa, pico de gallo, and sour cream. If that isn’t enough, you can add your choice of chicken, pulled pork, or shredded beef, too.

Switch things up a bit and order your nachos as Totchos the next time you’re at Eleanor’s.

And if you’re looking for the original nacho, look no further than the nachos at Sidewinders. Made with fresh tomatoes, red onions, black olives, jalapeños and sour cream atop a mound of corn chips with melted cheese, you’ll be satisfied. We love the version that comes with barbecued chicken.

There are plenty more variations to try around town. Three more of our favorites include the house nachos at Big Hole BBQ, with shredded cabbage and cilantro, the bueno nachos, with Oaxaca cheese, refried beans and your choice of protein from Merry Piglets Mexican Cafe, and the nachos deluxe at El Abuelito.

So the next time you’re in the mood, just remember, there are plenty of choices and you decide whether to share or not!
