How to Make your Picnic Perfect

Hot summer days call for picnics by the water or on your favorite trail. I love the laid-back atmosphere of a picnic with friends and family and try to make it part of the weekly summer routine. Below, I will share some ideas of how to make your picnic gathering organized and unique.

  • A basket, wood box or cooler is essential for transporting your food and drinks.
  • Picnics are a great time to pull out all of your beautiful textiles, which will set the tone for your gathering.  Blankets, tablecloths, rugs, floor cushions, and tapestries can all be incorporated into your gathering to add a special touch.
  • Wrapping your silverware ahead of time in a cloth napkin, tied with a ribbon or twine will elevate the dining experience. I like to have disposable bamboo silverware on hand for occasions like these.
  • I always pack shears, so I can forage any florals I notice along the way.
  • A large cutting board is nice to have for a stable surface, and I always bring my favorite New West Knifeworks paring knife to cut charcuterie.
  • Lightweight durable plates are essential for picnicking. I have several collections of enamelware dishes that I have purchased at antique stores over the years, which add character to the gathering. You can also use bamboo plates, which make for no clean-up when you are through!
  • Leave no trace at your picnic spot by bringing a trash bag to collect any leftover food waste and trash.
  • The best part about a picnic, is there are no rules. Have fun, get creative, and enjoy your time nature.
