Plant Regional High Altitude Seeds this Spring

Teton Rental stocks Snake River Seed Cooperative products.

Home gardeners in the Tetons are well aware of the challenges of growing fresh produce in tumultuous mountain climates. That’s why seed selection is so important.

Teton Rental is selling seeds from Snake River Seed Cooperative, designed specifically to thrive in high altitude climates like Jackson. Based out of Idaho, the coop sources seeds from farmers all over the intermountain west, with a variety of vegetables, herbs, grains and flowers that have all adapted over time to withstand cold and high-altitude farming environments.

“It’s a great product for our area,” says Teton Rental owner Zach Vosika. “The seeds are adjusted to our short growing times, climate, and altitude. It’s something I use in my own garden.”

Vosika opts for the cold hardy vegetables that can stand up to fickle Teton spring weather, with lettuces, herbs, and crops like carrots and radishes. “In my experience, those have worked really well in this climate,” he says.

All seeds from Snake River Seed are non-GMO and open-sourced, designed to support local farmers and growers in an effort to build a better local growing system overall. The Coop has over 50 farmers and 350 types of seeds so far, and it’s growing each season.

While it might not be time to prep the garden just yet, it’s definitely not far off on the horizon; and once nightime temps rise and the snow in the valley melts out, there’s no time to waste if you want to take advantage of the narrow window to grow your own veggies in the Tetons.

“It’s going to be a very short growing season because of the long spring we’re having,” says Vosika.  “So we are really gonna have to get going as soon as the snow melts.”

Pick up seeds, garden supplies, and tons of other camping and outdoor gear at Teton Rental, as well as all a variety of construction equipment for larger projects like building a garden.
