The Best Foods to Combat Winter Dryness

According to the recent snow report, it seems that winter is here to stay. With the deepest February Jackson has ever seen, many of us are feeling the effects of a cold, harsh winter. What is taking the brunt of that bitter cold and dryness? Our skin! While I normally take a fairly lax approach to skincare, Jackson winters have made that nearly impossible.

Recently, I have added a few products and routines into my skin care regimen. However, the thing that has helped the most is treating the problem from the inside out. By incorporating these hydrating and healing foods into my diet, my skin has improved dramatically!

1. Collagen

Taking a collagen supplement, such as Vital Protein or Great Lakes Collagen, has been shown to brighten the skin. Another source of collagen is bone broth, which is made easily in a crockpot or Instapot!

2. Cilantro

This delicious herb has skin healing and hormone balancing powers. Research shows that it even reduces the aging effects of sun damage. Throw a bunch in your morning smoothie or sprinkle on top of eggs for a winter glow!

3.Cucumber

Cucumbers are about 95 percent water, so if you have trouble remembering to drink water, try snacking on a few slices of cucumber. Place a few slices in a glass of water for a refreshing combination!

4. Avocado

Looking for a way of hydrating the skin without drinking water? Eat more good fats! Avocados and avocado oil are quite healing for dry skin and may have even more benefits than olive oil. Avocado oil is a great cooking oil due to its high smoke point and tastes delicious on salads and rice bowls!

5. Wild Caught Salmon

Eating wild caught and sustainably sourced fish is a great way to increase your consumption of omega 3 fatty acids. These good fats have been shown to improve and protect the skin, while combating dryness. Flax seeds and chia seeds are also great sources of omega 3s and can be added to just about any meal!

6. Oranges

Oranges are one of my favorite foods for staying hydrated in the winter! A full orange has about 2/3 cup of water in it. The vitamin C also supports collagen production and helps to combat dryness.

7. Herbal Tea

I don’t know what it is about water in the winter, but I never seem to drink enough of it! Drinking herbal tea has helped increase my water consumption while also adding beneficial herbs to my diet. I love adding an orange peel or a scoop of Manuka honey for even more skin brightening benefits!
