Tandooria Brings Indian to Jackson

If you ask anyone who lives here what Jackson’s food scene is missing, you’ll probably get the same answer from everyone: Indian cuisine.

Fortunately for us, a new Indian take-out/delivery restaurant is opening today. Tandooria, which will be operated out of Wake Up (the stand next to Thai Plate), will offer a handful of traditional Indian dishes for lunch and dinner.

There’s no website or menu. You just have to check the Facebook page daily to see what dishes are being served. Lunch will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dinner starts at 5 p.m. Deliveries will made by bike and are limited to town (they’ll go north to Creekside Market, east to St. John’s Medical Center and south/west to Bubba’s).

Owner Mitch Wittekind said he’s always wanted to open a restaurant in Jackson. He currently owns Sanook Thai in Salt Lake City.

But in coming to Jackson, he didn’t want to compete with his neighbors and decided to offer Indian cuisine. It’s something he has experience with. Sanook Thai also cooks Indian and Pakistani cuisine.

The dishes (all made with spices imported from India) are tried and tested recipes. His sister, who owns Naomis Cakes in Victor, is making his naan. You’ll find tikka masala, aloo matar, veggie korma and chana masala.

And not to worry about winter. Wittekind plans to make a few renovations to the stand to allow him to operate year-round.
