Anyone that is fortunate enough to live in Jackson Hole knows that this area is filled with more than a lifetime of places to explore and things to do: endless adventures, exciting experiences and great getaways.

I am a huge fan of getting away for a weekend or a night to reach and really explore some areas we don’t get to on a normal weekend at home. My most recent trip was down to Lakeside Lodge on Freemont Lake in Pinedale.

I can’t say enough good things about this place. First, they welcome your dogs. That is always a huge bonus for us as what’s a weekend away without your children?!? Secondly, its only about an hour and 15 minutes away so you can easily get down for a night without too much time in the car. And thirdly, it offers tons of activities, a great restaurant with an incredible view and lovely lakeside cabins. What more could you ask for!

As far as I’m concerned, Lakeside Lodge is one of my new favorite places in the area for a weekend getaway. Last weekend, we went down there with some friends and our dogs. We had a full morning in Jackson before we took off – playing hockey in Wilson and taking care of a few errands. An easy and beautiful drive transported us to this gorgeous, now frozen, lake and some nice cabins with a spectacular view. I relaxed in front of our cabin fireplace that afternoon with a book, before heading to dinner.

The dining room at the lodge is led by Executive Chef Jeremy Horn. Many from Jackson will recognize Horn, who most recently worked at Local, but has been at many great restaurants in the valley. The menu is substantial, offering more casual plates like nachos alongside upscale choices like steaks, seafood and specials. Horn has put a focus on providing high quality ingredients, like regional meats and sustainable fish, but keeping prices reasonable (entrées are in the $20-30 range).

Over the weekend we ice fished, cross country skied on uncrowded, groomed trails, played games and enjoyed the view. Another a highlight? Taking the polar bear plunge into the ice covered lake — don’t be afraid the experience was amazing and nobody got so cold they couldn’t handle it.

Winter rates start at $85 per cabin (all 16 rooms have two beds). The restaurant, which only serves dinner in the winter, is open Wednesday through Sunday nights. Summer reservations fill up quickly so I suggest reserving a room as soon as you can pick a night if you are thinking about a trip down there during boating season.

In town, don’t miss the Cowboy Shop on your way out of town for a huge selection of western wear and a stop in Daniel at the Green River Bar (about 10 minutes away towards Jackson) for a lunch of surprisingly good fried food and slaw dogs if you can take the smoke-filled bar. We didn’t make it, but I have heard the beer and food at Wind River Brewing Co. are great too.
