Gluten-Free Omission Beer Found in Jackson

omission

I had heard about Omission Beer and was interested in trying it, but when you live in a small town like Jackson, it takes awhile for things to get to you.

When I found out that Jackson Whole Grocer was carrying the brand, I ran to the store to try it.?I was excited, until I got my six-pack of pale ale home and looked at the case that said, “crafted to remove gluten.”

That didn’t exactly sound gluten free to me.  As I continued reading, I didn’t feel any more assured. “Gluten levels are well below the codex gluten-free standard.”

What did that even mean? Many people had told me this was a gluten-free beer. But I had to check for myself.

Omission Beer is actually brewed with traditional ingredients such as barley and malt. I don’t know how, but during the brewing process it somehow becomes gluten free. (Because malted barley is used to make this beer, it cannot be labeled as gluten free.)

Each batch is sent to a lab where it undergoes testing for levels of gluten. Each bottle of beer is connected to the company’s website, where you can see for yourself its test results.

There is a great video on the website that explains the six years it took to create this beer. I tried the pale ale. It has a great bold and hoppy taste. I will definitely stock up on this beer when I see it.

There are currently only two restaurants in Jackson that carry Omission. Lotus Café carries bottles, and Lift  now carries this gluten free beer on tap. Jackson Whole Grocer is currently the only liquor store that has Omission.

A number of restaurants in Jackson carry other types of gluten free beer, either Red Bridge or New Planet. They include Cafe Genevieve, Nikai, Nick Wilson’s in Teton Village, The Bird and Thai Me Up. The Wort, Eleanor’s, The Cowboy Bar and the Town Square Tavern all carry hard cider.

My favorite in town has been the Snake River Brew Pub’s Glutinator. It was a great gluten-free beer that went fast, so hopefully they will bring it back. But until then, Omission is my first choice for a gluten free brewski.
