Farmer’s Market Favorites

JH Market place

For those of us trying to eat local, Jackson has provided us many opportunities this summer. We’re lucky enough to now have four farmers markets where we can stock up on fruits, veggies, meats, cheeses and breads. On Tuesday afternoons, Aspens Market hosts its market, followed by the Jackson Hole Peoples Market on Wednesdays at the base of Snow King. Sloane Andrews, with the Jackson Hole Farmers Market opens her stand Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays in the Movieworks Plaza (Andrews also has a stand at the Saturday Town Square Market). And rounding out the week is the Farmers Market on the Town Square on Saturdays.

Dishing has been scouring the markets for some of the newest vendors, and we’re excited to report Jackson foodies are lucky enough to see several newcomers to the market.

Find Jackson Food Company on Saturdays at the Town Square market. The company offers homemade chutneys and relishes, all savory and all beyond delicious. They also offer kasoundi, a Bengali mustard relish. The spreads of this Aussie-owned local brand make wonderful additions to your breads, meats, or cheeses. Each jar offered — kasoundi, onion chili jam or tomato chutney — sells for $7.

The best traditional salsa you can find in town is available from Hole Lotta Salsa at the People’s Market on Wednesday. What started as a salsa competition between friends has blossomed into a delicious product you can take home for $5. The mix is undeniably fresh and strikes the perfect heat balance between mild and spicy. The decade-old recipe not only tastes great with the classic tortilla chip, but also makes a zesty, low-fat alternative to salad dressing.

Meanwhile, Teton Hummus uses their spreads as mediums for wildly inventive flavors. Because they use dried beans for maximum flavor and nutritional heft, each variety of hummus (including oven-roasted tomato and basil, peppered bacon and date, and smoky chipotle and lime) packs a punch of flavor. The artichoke and white truffle oil spread is their most popular, and for good reason. But get there early — since opening, they have sold out every week. Each container of hummus is $6, or two for $11. You can buy them at the Saturday Town Square Market or Wednesdays at the People’s Market.

Once you’ve had your fill of spreads, check out Jackson Hole Pop!, a company that takes the art of popcorn-making to new levels. Their four house flavors ($5 per bag) are the most popular, particularly their kettle corn and caramel corn. But don’t let that stop you from trying their three artisan flavors at $8 per bag, including spicy buffalo blue cheese and pepper bacon. If you’re lucky, you might catch them making fresh kettle corn on site. Find them on the Town Square and at the People’s Market.

Finally, Mountain Roots collaborates with local purveyors, such as bakers, farmers, and ranchers, to package, market, and distribute local treats. Their table includes treats from all over Jackson, ranging from Persephone and Wild Flour bakeries to Wyoming Soaps and and the Lockhart Cattle Company. They seem to have an innovative product for every budget. One dollar will buy you hummus and caviar on flatbread, or you can take home a jar of gourmet cookies for $15 to $25.  And don’t worry, you won’t miss their table — Mountain Roots has a knack for charming packaging and food presentation. Find them at Aspens Market on Tuesdays or on the Town Square. You can also find their products on the shelves of Jackson Whole Grocer and Aspens Market.
