Mountain Story 2019

January 17, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Annette McGiveney // Pure Land and the Healing Power of Nature
THURS Jan 17, 7 p.m., Teton County Library Ordway Auditorium

Join Annette McGivney as she shares how a story assignment for Backpacker magazine changed her life and grew into the recent book Pure Land: A True Story of Three Lives, Three Cultures, and the Search for Heaven on Earth. McGivney will talk about her experience writing Pure Land where she explored the connections between family violence and trauma — and how a relationship to wild places can heal these wounds. Part true crime and part memoir, Pure Land is the story of the most brutal murder in the history of Grand Canyon and of the author’s personal journey as she became connected to both the victim and the perpetrator. A review published in Outside magazine states: “Pure Land is so gripping, so well reported, and so well told that it deserves space on the bookshelf next to major commercial successes like Krakauer’s Into the Wildand Terry Tempest Williams’ Refuge.” McGivney’s efforts with Pure Land include a non-profit program she started called The Healing Lands Project that takes child victims of domestic violence on wilderness trips. McGivney is on a mission to raise awareness about how nature heals — especially for people suffering from trauma.
